Evaluation of the Brochure from Another Culture

Cu Chi Tunnel’s Brochure

Foreign visitors, tourists, and people of the region are the target audiences of Cu Chi Tunnel’s Brochure (n.d.). Digging the underground tunnel system of more than 70 km long represents the determination of Vietnamese to battle with the foreigners of French and Americans. The brochure conveys this message by using heroic words and images. This includes the compound terms such as “the holy revolutionary base” and “enemy fighting and national unity”. The photographs are also used to emphasise the heroic sense of past war. The map of the tunnels, aligned with the portrait of a young Vietnamese lady, historical monuments, and well-structured constructions are all rhetorically symbolising Vietnam’s revolutionary heroism.  The heading “Ben Douc Martyrs’ Memorable Temple” The expression implies that all those who have been killed during the war were sacrificed their lives for the country.

Unlike this brochure ‘Alternate Perspectives on the Cu Chi Tunnels’ reports about the Cu Chi tunnels without any heroic sense and provides an impartial narration of the story. This difference can be easily noticed by the use of words and the tone of language used in the two texts about Cu Chi Tunnels. Comparing to the heroic words used in the brochure the visitors use a plain language without any metaphorical expressions and revolutionary vocabulary. The third kind of story is the narration by an Australian visitor who narrates about the tunnel with fear and danger. The camouflage for in this text is described to be “scarcely wide enough for your shoulders” and the text about inside the tunnel as an unpleasant place you need to use a gas mask which has taken many lives.
