Linde, K., Barrett, B., Wölkart, K., Bauer, R.
& Melchart, D. (2006). Echinacea for preventing and treating the common
cold. The Cochrane Library. Retrieved from: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16437427
This article is collaborative research of
experts working in the University of Technology in Munich. It is a systematic review of Echinacea
preparations with regards to common cold treatment and describes different results
in clinical trials. The review
highlights the lack of awareness of both general practitioners and consumers of Echinacea
variability. The research consisting of comprehensive studies in major medical
research institutions, conducting interviews with scientists and screening of
references. Medical researcher, regulatory and the public are likely to be the target group of this review. The authors concluded that there might be the initial treatment for the common cold in adults using aerial parts of Echinacea purpurea. Very minor
side effects were recorded particularly for children. This systematic review was published in 2006. The main issue is still important and relevancy is growing as Echinacea is
widely used in European countries and North America, therefore further and
up-to-date research is needed.
